Computer Networking

How does a packet get from a process on one machine to a process on another, reliably and at scale, despite noise, contention, congestion, failure and attackers? This course builds the answer from the wire up, so that you can debug a slow connection, read a packet capture and argue a protocol choice with mechanisms rather than folklore. Each layer inherits a concrete failure from the layer below it — corrupted bits, collisions, a flat address space, unknown paths, loss and reordering, congestion, untrusted parties — and each module says which failure it takes on and which it leaves for the next. It builds on Mathematics, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems and System Design.

Foundations draws the map. The physical layer, framing and error control, multiple access and Ethernet and wireless links move bits across one link. Internetworking with IP, routing within a network, routing between networks and engineering paths carry packets across many links. Reliable delivery, TCP and congestion control turn lost and reordered packets into a fair, reliable byte stream, and naming and host configuration and address sharing let hosts find one another.

The web comes next: the web over TCP, cryptographic building blocks, TLS, QUIC and HTTP/3 and content delivery. Specialised modules branch from there — mobile networks, securing routing and naming, attacks on hosts and their defences, datacenter networks, software and programmable data paths and real-time media — and measurement and synthesis closes the course.

159 topics across 26 modules, in dependency order.

159 of 159 topics are authored. Read in dependency order: each topic opens with the problem earlier topics left open and closes with what it still leaves open. Planned lessons are labelled and excluded from progress; references cover authored material.
